SNC Demonstrates 3D 94 GHz Imaging Radar for Helicopter Operations in Sparks, Nevada – April 29 2009 – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) announced today that it successfully achieved another milestone with it’s three-dimensional 94 GHz imaging radar for helicopter operations in Degraded Visual Environments (DVE). SNC developed its next generation radar system as part of the Sandblaster program led by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. The radar system went from concept to flight test in fifteen months. The Technology Demonstration system operated flawlessly during the four month flight test period. The system provided continuous three-dimensional (3D) real-time radar data of the landing zone throughout the approach and hover during the Flight Test conducted at the U.S. Army Aeroflight Dynamics Directorate (AFDD) at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California. The radar system was installed on the AFDD RASCAL JUH-60 BLACK HAWK helicopter. Approaches were flown to different terrain types, slopes and obstacles, including moving vehicles. A simulated Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP) with small obstacles was created to evaluate the performance of the system. SNC’s antenna technology and imaging software demonstrated as part of this program provides a technological path forward to a smaller, lighter weight antenna capable of performing takeoff, enroute, approach, landing and cable/wire/obstacle detection. The 3D radar imagery was easily correlated to the outside world as shown in the images below:
